It refers to the former term “child pornography.” Child pornography refers to any photographic, filmed or other representation of a person under the age of 18 years depicted or engaged in explicit sexual activity (section 163.1 of the Criminal Code). We prefer to use the term “images of sexual exploitation of minors” so as not to minimize the impact on victims through the term “pornography.”

In Quebec, the age of majority is 18. Any person under the age of 18 is therefore considered a child or a minor for the purposes of youth protection.
