1A – Understanding why

In this section, we will help you understand your behaviour, whether it is sexual fantasies about minors or viewing child sexual exploitation material on the Internet.

Objectives

This section aims to help you explore and understand the following:

  • Your sexual fantasies towards minors or your online sexual behaviours
  • How your sexual fantasies or behaviours have progressed or could progress to sexual offending
  • Your motivations
  • Patterns and trends in your current use of Internet pornography and access to illegal images

What motivates you to look at child sexual exploitation material on the Internet (images, videos, etc.) or to entertain fantasies about them?

If you are concerned about accessing images of sexual exploitation of minors on the Internet, or if you have accessed them and want to stop, it is important that you learn as much as possible about yourself and your behaviour. The same applies if you have sexual fantasies about minors. The first step is to understand why you are doing this.

The list below shows some common motivations reported by people who have fantasies about minors or who have accessed images of sexual exploitation of minors:

  • Boredom
  • Low self-esteem
  • Stress
  • Curiosity
  • Desensitization to legal adult pornography
  • Sexual satisfaction
  • Loneliness
  • No or reduced sex life
  • Arousal
  • Attraction to children
  • Comfort
  • Buzz or risk-taking
  • Relationship problems
  • Sex addiction
